California Windows

Where else, but in California, can you swim in the warm ocean in the morning and ski the frosty slopes of the Sierra mountains by afternoon? From arid deserts to near arctic cold, California is a state of hot, dry summers, and wet, cold winters. Depending on where you live, your home is treated to high winds, damp fog, unrelenting sun, or thunderstorms. That's why having the right window for your climate can make all the difference in protecting your home and keeping down energy costs.

Replacement windows can be an excellent investment for Californians. In 2008-2009, average job costs to replace ten, 3-by-5-foot, double-hung windows with insulated vinyl replacement windows was less than $13,000. Yet, homeowners were generally satisfied that their decreased utility expenditures and increased attractiveness to potential home buyers made replacement windows worth the cost.

California Window Replacement Ratings

California Window Replacement Ratings The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established acceptable energy ratings for replacement windows in all the states, based on climate. For California, the EPA recommends windows with a minimum U-Factor of 0.40 and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) of 0.40. The U-Factor rates the window for heat flow, while the SHGC rates the amount of heat the window absorbs from the sun. If you're shopping for vinyl or fiberglass replacement windows in California, you want to make sure they meet these minimums to ensure energy conservation and utility savings.

In California, all businesses or individuals who work on replacement window projects must be licensed by the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) if the total cost is $500 or more. Be sure you hire a reputable contractor to ensure the work meets your state or local building codes and suits your climate.
