The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) applies stickers to windows in the showroom or those shown by contractors to identify the energy performance of replacement windows. The ratings vary by the portion of the state in which you reside. In the north of the state, windows designed to improve home heating are common, while in the southern part of the state, windows should be optimized for home cooling.

Requirements for rebates and top window efficiency by minimum U-factors and Solar Heat Gain Coefficients (SHGC) are:

U-factors measure non-solar heat loss and gain. The lower numbers reflect a replacement window's insulating efficiency. SHGC measures heat gain from sunlight. The lower the number on the rating, the greater the window's ability to block harmful rays.

In California, window replacement contractors are required to hold a license. To determine if your window replacement specialist is licensed, contact the Contractors State License Board within the California Department of Consumer Affairs.
